Stortford Archers instrumental in Hertfordshire victory against Bedfordshire and Sussex and dominate County Championships

Stortford archers were once again instrumental in the Hertfordshire county team victory on Saturday 23rd July 2022, with Hertfordshire winning Barebow, Compound, Recurve and Juniors against Sussex, with Sussex winning the Longbow.  Hertfordshire claimed victory across all bow styles against Bedfordshire.

Of the 25-strong Hertfordshire team, 9 members of Stortford wore county colours; 7 of which were awarded Gold, Silver, or Bronze in the match against Sussex.

The UK Record Status shoot, held at Jobber’s Wood, also saw a new national record shot by Amelia Chumber of Noak Hill Archers, Essex, in the Ladies Under-18 Barebow Hereford with a score of 813 – with only three misses.

In the county championships, held simultaneously, Stortford topped the results in the County Compound Team match, with Rachel Boynton and Stuart Barber shooting 2307.  Steven Pyne, Nigel Boardman and Rebecca Bourne took the silver in the County Recurve Team event.

Stortford Juniors stormed to victory with Emily Young (1013), Star Austin (877), Amy Hancock (871), and Sophia Coles (641), all claiming the top two spots in the Bristol III and Bristol IV rounds.  Star Austin was awarded County Champion for Bristol III, and Emily Young was awarded County Champion for Bristol IV.

In the seniors, Rachel Boynton retained her title as County Champion in the Ladies Compound division, whilst Stuart Barber took the Bronze in the Gents Compound.  Peter Sweetman took Silver in Barebow, and Rebecca Bourne took Bronze in the Ladies Recurve.  Laura Young won Gold in the Ladies Bristol II Recurve.  Having completed a beginner’s course only a month ago, Leila Abidia shot an incredible 866 in the Bristol IV, her first-ever twelve dozen round.

Stuart Barber, County Chairman, Tournament Organiser, and Stortford Club Secretary, said, “I am extremely proud of the county achievements and the success of the Stortford archers is helping the county become one of the strongest in the region.”

Hertfordshire's next intercounty match is against Middlesex in September at the Stortford St. George.
